Corporate Social Responsibility

At First Citizens, we continually strive for excellent community relations, so that we may positively impact our social environment. We strive to maintain our commitment to the areas of youth and education, culture, sport, the advancement of women, and the environment.

Youth and Education

The Group believes that education is the key to unlocking Trinidad & Tobago’s vast supply of human potential and, as such, we pledge our continued support to our youth. In 2017 we pioneered the First Citizens/UWI Internship Programme opened to students enrolled in Computer Science studies at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. In 2018, the programme was expanded to include students from the Management Studies discipline and in 2019, the third cohort of nineteen students concluded another successful edition of the programme. During a twelve-week period, our employees take pride in guiding these young minds and offering them a platform for practical work experience.

First Citizens firmly believes in the rich cultural legacy of our nation and seeks every opportunity to support initiatives that promote the best of our unique cultural elements. Our employees join us on this journey, by serving at events such as the TUCO/Junior Calypso Monarch and the Junior Calypso Roving Tent, where we offer a platform for young persons involved in the art form of calypso. The competition is keenly contested and our staff take pride in cheering on the eager participants and engaging their supporters, through fun and educational activities that promote financial literacy. Likewise, our Offsite Branch has been a staple at the Divali Nagar Festival for over a decade, where our employees bring our banking services directly to the people, amidst the explosion of culture, for which the Festival is known.

Our employees enthusiastically work together to plan and execute one of the most prestigious sports awards functions, The First Citizens Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards. The event is hosted under the expert guidance of The First Citizens Sports Foundation, which has a rich legacy of acknowledging, honouring and applauding national sport achievers, for their outstanding performances.
Our staff have also developed their own reputation for sporting prowess, through our participation in CariFin, where we have competed and won against other financial institutions in various sporting events and the UWI SPEC International Half Marathon, where our professional and amateur long-distance runners shine each year.

The Advancement of Women

First Citizens is dedicated to using our resources to empower the women of Trinidad & Tobago to fulfill their potential—at home, at work, and in society. For seven consecutive years, the Group has hosted its annual Women’s Conference across the Caribbean, with the aim of “inspiring, motivating and teaching women to live a more purpose-driven life.” In 2018, we changed the narrative and took a bold step – creating a healthy space for a conversation on domestic violence and followed this up with the equally important topic of Gender Messaging in Popular Culture for Women First: Changing the Narrative 2.
To close the gap in our outreach to women, First Citizens launched its Girls First Festival Series in November 2017, by targeting the issues faced by adolescent females. These festivals were overwhelmingly received across the country, taking hundreds of girls through developmental workshops such as Personal Safety and Health and Wellness. With the support of our staff who serve as facilitators and volunteer as festival Guides at the events, Girls First continues to be a huge success, hailed by parents, teachers and participants alike.

As a responsible corporate citizen, the Group is a firm believer in using our resources to help those in need, including our human resources. For the past six years, our employees have connected with the communities we serve, by participating in United Way’s National Day of Caring. Merging community outreach with environmental care, our employees focus on sustainable projects such as creating Green Spaces at homes and schools across Trinidad and Tobago; serving our country in a new sphere, whilst building a keen sense of camaraderie.
